Skill proficiency (skill PT)
This is also an important aspect of building your character. The great thing about this type of proficiency is that the only way you can dead end yourself here, is if the related combat proficiency (PT) isn’t leveled, but I am getting ahead of myself.
Skill proficiency (skill PT) and combat proficiency (PT) are different. When you begin the game and choose your class, you are given class specific skills.
Warriors are given melee attack skills and buffs.
Rangers are given ranged attack skills and buffs
Mages are given force skills and buffs, but required to buy spells.
These skills are very useful and important to your class.
To view your skills you press the “S” button on the keyboard. The skill window is shown in the picture below. |
You will notice the skills are separated by category, and each skill has its own Skill proficiency experience bar and current/max pt rating just like your combat proficiencies did.
Every time you use a buff (on yourself or someone else) or attack skill (on a mob or another race) you will gain a small amount of Skill proficiency (skill PT) experience.
Use the skill to increase the skill, it’s that simple.
You will notice that each skill has its own level. |
Every time your Skill proficiency experience bar reaches 100% from skill usage, the skill will increase by one level.
Every skill has 7 levels and then reaches “GM” (I believe it means “Grand master”) which basically means it’s capped and cannot be leveled any further.
As I said before, each skill falls under a category. First is dependant on what type of skill it is (melee, ranged, or force). To change between them click the corresponding buttons at the top of the window.
In order from left to right the buttons are melee, ranged, and force |
| The next division of skills is the different tiers. Every class begins at tier 1. There are two more tiers (middle and high class) that are unlocked by obtaining a certain number of Skill proficiency pt. You gain Skill proficiency pt by using the skills as I mentioned before. The following picture shows where you can monitor your current and max Skill proficiency pt. |
| The last tier or type of skill are those specific to your class changes at level 30 and 40. These skills cannot be leveled. The skill tier categories are highlighted in the window below. |
Keep in mind, that in order to use your offensive skills, you must have the proper weapon equipped. There maybe certain cases where you want to keep up with combat proficiencies not specific to your class.
For instance, Accretian launchers can benefit from the tier 2 ranger skills, which include a maximum distance increase on ranged attacks. In order to obtain this skill, the player would need to level his long range combat proficiency (PT) with a bow, gun, or throwing weapon since launchers do not count for long range combat proficiency (PT). That way, the player can use the Fast Shot offensive attack skill to gain Skill proficiency pt to unlock tier 2.
If the player does not use the offensive ranged skill (which needs a long range weapon type) then the higher level buffs cannot be unlocked for use. |
Conclusion
So to wrap up the biggest and most important aspects of this discussion:
There are basically 3 separate leveling mechanisms for your character in RFO:
Experience (XP)
Combat proficiency (PT)
Skill proficiency (skill PT)
Experience (XP) IS NOT the end all be all of this game, like it is in almost every other MMORPG.
The best way to think about XP is that it acts only as a cap for both types of PTs
Power leveling will gimp/hurt your characters build if not done correctly.
Ignore the XP bar. You have more important things to worry about. Namely your pts.
Combat proficiency (PT) is hands down the most important aspect of this game for your character. It determines how powerful you are, and what equipment you can use.
Combat proficiency (pt) is more important than anything else in this game other than potions. The only way to gain Combat proficiency (pt) is to train what it is associated to.
Determining what Combat proficiency (PTs) to level is completely dependant on your class and play style. Decide what works best for you with the time you wish to spend working on them.
One should only begin to focus on gaining Experience (XP) and experience levels when their combat proficiency (PTs) are maxed, or closed to being maxed.
NOTE: Capping/Maxing should only truely apply to pre level 30 characters (more so to those who are unsure what types of equipment they will use in wars, or what stats they should/want to increase). As you become higher level, having enough pts to equip the next set of equipment is more than adequate.
Skill proficiency (skill PT) and combat proficiency (PT) are different but they can be directly dependant on one another.
Every time you use a buff (on yourself or someone else) or attack skill (on a mob or another race) you will gain a small amount of Skill proficiency (skill PT) experience.
Use the skill to increase the skill, it’s that simple.
Every class begins at tier 1 skills. There are two more tiers (middle and high class) that are unlocked by obtaining a certain number of Skill proficiency pt. You gain Skill proficiency pt by using the skills
ADITIONAL INFORMATION:
Provided by KanuKuma:
I know Waste touched up on this but I would like to elaborate on how important the Force Skill PT is for mages so you don't become a gimp mage. The Force PT looks like the pic below. I would recommend for mages to use all their Beginner Skill PT (Fire/Wind/Water/Earth). Why? Becuase you can't use your middle Skills PTs until you level your Begginer Skill PT to level 30. It would be wise for you to level all your Begginner Skill PT so at least you have options to Use your Middle Skill PT. Here's a senario and i've seen it happen several times.
At lower levels you decide to level only Fire & Water but ignore Earth and Wind. Well for Middle Skill PT for Earth you get a Skill/Spell called Haitus which Roots your enemy to the ground and slows their movement. So if you've only leveled up Fire & Water at lower levels and now your at your mid 20s its is going to be really tough to kill higher mobs with Force Skills at LvL 1 if you decide maybe you should have leveled your other Forces too.
Also in a PvP a very common technique that Mages like to use is rooting the enemy to the ground then disabling their Forces or Skills and then PWNing them with Damage skills. So again level up your Begginer Skills so you have more options to pick unless of course you don't want to use the other Skills throughout.
On the Pic the RED box is your average Begginner Skill PT 1/60. This is what you will be looking for to hit 30 so you will be able to use Middle Skill PT.
The Green box shows your Force or Skill's LvL which increases everytime you use it and when you increase it your Average Begginner Skill PT also increases. |
Anyway hope you understood that...just my 2 cents advice.
