The game starts you off with the choice of several [base] classes such as warrior, ranger, spiritualist, or specialist. Each has their own unique abilities and stats (to an extent). Your base class is the most important part of your character as it will decide what class-specific skills you will be able to learn later on in the game.
At level 30, you will be able to advance into your second class and gain new abilities. You must proceed to your Race Manager and select [Class Promotion] from the options. Here you will have all options available to you, in other words, a warrior can advance into any class a ranger, spiritualist, or specialist can, and vice versa. However, there are strings attached. Although you can freely advance into any class of your choice, only the class(es) which connect to your [base] class will reward you with [class-specific] skills. These skills play an important role in the game so it would be wise to choose your class carefully.
At level 40, you will be able to advance into your third class and gain new abilities. This is similar to the level 30 class promotion, except your options of classes are severely limited. Your level 40 class options are determined by the class you selected at level 30. For more on which level 40 classes will be available to which level 30 classes, see the race-specific class guides.
At both class advances, you will receive bonus PT in the areas of your selected class and an item associated with your selected class. This varies for all the different classes, and some receive more than others.
Cross Classing
There are two types of classes in RF Online. There are the [pure] classes which follow a defined class route such as the Spiritualist > Summoner, then there are [cross] classes (aka. hybirds) such as a Warrior > Archer.
The benefit of cross-classing is that you will receive access to two different skill/force categories. A Warrior > Archer will receive access to close-range skills, as well as ranged skills. If the right classes are crossed, it can make you very powerful.
However, the main drawback from cross-classing is that you will not receive any [class-specific] skills. These are skills which are normally awarded to a player who is promoted to a higher class ¨C but only if the player is a pure class. There is one exception however. When a Cora warrior/ranger/specialist crosses into a summoner at level 30, they will gain the ability to summon as this is considered a race special. The same is true for Bellato warrior/ranger/spiritualists who cross into driver. Accretians, regardless of class, can use their [siege kit] race special at level 30.
Class Redefining
So you chose the wrong class and want to go back? It is understandable, so instead of having you create another character from scratch, RFO allows you to [redefine] your class¡but it will cost you. To redefine your class, talk to the Hero NPC in your HQ and select [Redefine Class].
Redefining class costs:
1st time: 1,000 gold
2nd time: 10,000 gold
3rd time: 100,000 gold
4th time: 1,000,000 gold
5th time: 1,000,000 gold
etc..
Technically, redefining will not affect your earned PTs, but they will affect your PT caps. It may also affect your HP/FP/SP. Once you redefine, you will lose the class specific skills and abilities of your previous class. You will be returned to your base class (warrior, ranger, spiritualist, or specialist) even if you redefine from a level 40 class such as Grazier or Armor Rider.
You will also not [gain] any bonus PT when you select a new class, or any items as rewards. You will still gain the class-specific skills of your new class, but only if you are eligible to receive them (i.e. if you¡¯re not cross-classing).
